Introducing Our New Credential Coordinator

NYSPEP is pleased to announce our new Credential Coordinator, Jennie Knox. Applicants, please mail the hardcopy portion of your application and application fee (made payable to "PCANY", fiscal agent for NYSPEP) to: Jennie Knox  PO Box 470  Bath, NY 14810. Vicarious Trauma is a stress reaction experienced by service providers who are exposed to disclosures of trauma by those they serve, which can cause long-term changes in the way the provider views self, others, and the world. Lorraine McMullin, will explain what Vicarious Trauma is, how it can impact your work, and how you can protect yourself from this condition.

Choose one of the following workshops, which will follow the plenary:

Compassion Fatigue is fatigue, emotional distress, or apathy—a combination of physical, emotional, and spiritual depletion—as a result of the constant demands of caring for others. Learn to recognize symptoms, identify probable causes, and apply tools to prevent or recover from this condiiton. Presented by Mary Haust (09/15, 10/16, 10/27) and Meg Akabas (11/17).

Reflective Practice is a process by which one stops and thinks about one's practice and uses critical analysis to refocus one's thinking and generate new ideas that may modify one's actions and behavior. Learn how to apply this valuable process through reflective supervision, peer group reflective practice, and self-reflection. Presented by Judy Wolf (09/15, 10/16, 10/27) and Donna Morrison (11/17).

Registration fee: $50 per person. All sessions include a process activity to help integrate information into practice. Lunch is included.

In the United States, about 25% of high school students don't graduate. Reading in the 3rd grade is a strong predictor for graduation rates; the number of words a child knows between ages 2-3 predicts reading in the 3rd grade. However, 66% of 4th graders aren't reading at grade level. For children among low income families, that statistic rises to 80%. Parenting educators and family service providers can help parents learn to teach their children language acquisition and early literacy skills.

Mary Haust presents the latest research with Digging Deeper: Sowing for Success along with an all-new companion workshop. A panel discussion on Statewide Community Resources includes local representatives Patricia Uttaro, Rochester Public Library & Monroe County Library System; Marion French, Education & Interactive Services - WXXI; and Brigid Hubberman, Family Reading Partnership.

Registration fee: $50 per person. The afternoon workshop will break into small activity groups to help process information into practice. Lunch is included.

There's still time to register your site for Dads Take Your Child To School Day (DTYCTSD). Schools, daycare centers, Head Start programs, and organizations are encouraged to provide engagement activities for fathers, grandfathers, step fathers, foster fathers, uncles, older brothers, and other primary caregivers who will take their child to school on September 16th.

Strengthening Families Program

Dr. Karol Kumpfer, developer of the Strengthening Families Program (SFP), presents the research on the new SFP Home-Use DVD. SPF trainers will train participants on its use with individuals and groups. There is no cost to attend. Lunch and the SFP DVD are included. Parenting educators, home visitors, social workers, and professionals or paraprofessionals who work directly with families are invited.

Every Student Present Campaign


The Every Student Present campaign addresses chronic absence in schools. A one-stop toolkit designed for organizations provides a variety of resources and suggestions on how to use the materials. A parent resource website provides families with information on how to support children, especially with issues related to school anxiety.

Mental Health America - Online Toolkits

Student Mental Health: Back To School & Back To Campus


The Back To School toolkit assists parents, teachers, and other caregivers to talk to kids about what's going on at school. Features include a list of steps caregivers can take and fact sheets on topics such as bullying and LGBT youth. The Back To Campus toolkit provides college-bound students with information on alcohol / substance use, depression, and self-care along with resources for colleges and universities.
