Register Now! 2014 Early Literacy Institute

Doors Open at 9:30 AM

Welcome & Plenary: 10:00 AM - Adjournment: 4:00 PM

Thursday, November 6th • Mustard St. Conference Center, Rochester, NY

In the United States, about 25% of high school students don't graduate. Reading in the 3rd grade is a strong predictor for graduation rates; the number of words a child knows between ages 2-3 predicts reading in the 3rd grade. However, 66% of 4th graders aren't reading at grade level. For children among low income families, that statistic rises to 80%. Parenting educators and family service providers can help parents learn to teach their children language acquisition and early literacy skills.

Mary Haust presents the latest research with Digging Deeper: Sowing for Success along with an all-new companion workshop. A panel discussion on Statewide Community Resources includes local representatives Patricia Uttaro, Rochester Public Library & Monroe County Library System; Marion French, Education & Interactive Services - WXXI; and Brigid Hubberman, Family Reading Partnership.

Registration fee: $50 per person. The afternoon workshop will break into small activity groups to help process information into practice. Lunch is included.
