Reading in the 3rd grade is a strong predictor for high school graduation. The number of words a child knows between age 2–3 predicts reading in the 3rd grade. You can be part of the solution! More Abouy the Keynote and Workshops

KEYNOTE: Digging Deeper; Sowing for Success. Mary Haust, Parents as Teachers. Far too many children enter school without the necessary literacy skills that help to ensure a successful K-12 experience. Research shows that parents play a critical role in determining whether or not their children will experience an inequality at the starting gate. Parenting educators play an important role in helping parents support language acquisition and early literacy. The keynote will focus on what research reveals about the inequality of language acquisition, how parents can bridge that gap, and how this research can influence parenting education practice. Participants will break into small groups to discuss challenges and solutions to engaging parents in literacy-based practices with their children.
WORKSHOP AGES 0-3: The Seeds of Literacy Are Sown in Very Fertile Soil! Sarah Hughes, RMC Research, Inc. and Mary Haust, Parents as Teachers. Participants will use the NYS Early Learning Guidelines and NYS Pre-K Foundation for the Common Core as they create pathways for learning. Participants will explore how parents can support these pathways at specific points in development and process what they can do to support the parent’s role in preparing a strong foundation for literacy.
WORKSHOP AGES 3-5: Leveling the Playing Field: Infusing Rich Language into the Home Environment - Preparing Children to Begin School Ready to Learn & Thrive. Elizabeth Spiro, The Guidance Center of Westchester. This workshop features a review of the current research on literacy acquisition, an engaging conversation, and interactive modeling of best practice techniques. Participants will actively explore how to best support parents in preparing their children for school-readiness.

RSVP for Poster Sessions or Take-One-Table

Please showcase your successful work with parents and primary caregivers in helping them promote language acquisiton and early literacy skills with their children. Please be prepared to describe your activity in 3 minutes or less and provide handouts for your table. You may bring a standard tri-fold display board (approximately 36" x 48"). Participants will have opportunity to view your table during meals and breaks throughout the day.
If you're not yet ready to present a poster session, but would like to provide information about your work or your organization's work as it relates to language acquisition or early literacy, you may bring one item, such as a brochure, flyer, or business card for the Take-One-Table.
